Who Was Frank O Farrell

Frank O’Farrell started his playing career with Cork United, but followed his former Cork colleague, Tommy Moroney to West Ham United in January 1948. O’Farrell was destined to be a respected scholar of the game despite his reserved personality. He was a talented wing-half who worked hard at his position. Possibly due to his reserved personality, he struggled to break into the Upton Park first team in the beginning of 1950. However, by the end of the year, he had earned a spot on the squad, and he made his league debut in a 4-1 loss at Notts County that November. O’Farrell’s first of nine international caps came that year, a 6-0 loss to Austria in Vienna on 7 May 1952.

When Eddie Lewis was traded to Preston North End from the Hammers in November 1956, he made the move with him. When the Lancashire club finished second in Division One to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1957–58, he was still a member of the team. Unfortunately for O’Farrell, the West Ham team he had worked so hard to help get promoted to the First Division that season ended up winning the Second Division.

He took over at Manchester United in June 1971 after leading Leicester to promotion and the Second Division title, but he lasted only eighteen months. The mild-mannered Irishman just couldn’t deal with the wild antics of George Best. He became his friend, supported him, and then abandoned him. United got off to a great start in his first season at the helm, and at one point that season they were 10 points ahead of the rest of the league. However, performance suffered as a result of O’Farrell’s impersonal attitude, which required all players to make an appointment to speak with him.

The following season, he got off to a terrible start, culminating in a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of a Don Rogers-inspired Crystal Palace team. In December of 1972, with 3.5 years left on his contract, O’Farrell was let go.He took over as Cardiff City’s manager in November of 1973, but he resigned in April of 1974 to become Iran’s national team’s coach and lead his country to the 1976 Asian Cup.

When Mike Green was hired as Torquay United’s manager in March 1977, he transitioned back to his previous role as general manager, which he had held since returning to the club in November 1976. When Bruce Rioch was hired as Torquay’s general manager in June 1982, he once again took over as manager. He worked as general manager until 1983, which was followed by his retirement in Torquay.
