Charles clayton obituary |Major Clayton was a Patrol Supervisor for the Military Police in Berlin and elsewhere in Germany while serving in the United States Army. In addition to the American Legion, he was also a member of the VFW.

After completing his education at the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in February 1979, Buck decided to join the North Carolina Auctioneers Association. As an auctioneer, he worked solely for charitable causes. Buck was devoted to his family and provided for them admirably. He will be sorely missed by all.

Steve Clayton and Tim Anderson were both predeceased by their father, Buck, as was their first wife Patricia Shepherd. Buck also had a sister, Edna Dement, who predeceased him.

In addition to his wife and two children, Buck is survived by his brother, David Clayton; his daughter Donna Anderson Harris; nephews, Chris Clayton and Larry Melton; nieces, Penny Kendricks and Vivan Thompson; godchildren, Josie and Noah Ferrell; and other relatives.

Donna Gullie, her sons Robbie and Jason, and her daughter, Sonya Elko, are among those mourning the loss of Donna’s best friend and caregiver.

He came to faith in Jesus Christ as a child and joined Springhill Baptist Church. He remained a loyal supporter until the end of his life.

Charles received his high school diploma from Clio Public High School. Many medals and badges were awarded to him during his time in the United States Army, including numerous medals for his service in Vietnam.

Charles went to Sparks Technical College to learn auto repair. Abbeville, Alabama’s City of Abbeville employed him as an automotive technician and he later retired from that position. His parents, the late John William and Tassie Mae Seamster Clayton, raised him in Durham, North Carolina, where he was born on May 23, 1937. He was a long-time member of Shady’s congregation.

He was baptized at Grove Baptist Church. In 1991, Mr. Clayton retired from the Durham Police Department with the rank of Major and went on to obtain his private investigator’s license in the process. In the absence of the Durham Police Department’s Chief, Buck served as the department’s interim Chief of Police.

During his military service, Major Clayton was stationed in Berlin. Charles had a great sense of humour and a smile that was contagious. As he and I reminisced about the past, he would share tales of war and Southern remedies for common ailments. He was a man of integrity. I’m a better person because of it.


The family of Charles Arthur Clayton, who passed away on March 7, 2022, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, extends their deepest condolences. He was born on January 5th, 1934, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

Family members who survive him include his son Rick Clayton (Timmi); daughter Kathy Clayton; grandchildren James, Jordon (Kristen); and Jennifer; and great-grandchildren Mya; Tyson; Jacob; and Annie.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no memorial service or visitation. It is possible to make memorial donations in his honor to a charity of the donor’s choosing. Donna Anderson Harris, Buck’s daughter, and nephews Chris Clayton (Dale) and Larry Melton (Angie) are among those left to cherish his memory.

Penny Kendricks (Stacey), Vivan Thompson, Josie and Noah Ferrell, Donna Gullie, Robbie Gullie (Lynn), Jason Gullie (Tammie), Sonya Elko (Troy), Nina Elko, Camden Gullie, and Sydney Gullie are among those mourning the loss of their aunt.

Robbie Gullie, Jason Gullie, Camden Gullie, Chris Clayton, Larry Melton, and Terry Holbrook will be pallbearers at the funeral. Tony Roop, Durwood Curry, Jimmy Lively, Joey Brooks, Mike Andrews, Worth Hill, and the Durham Police Department will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

The funeral service will be held at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 17, 2021, with a two-hour visitation period from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Clio Public High School was the final stop on Charles’ educational journey. For his military service, he received numerous medals and commendations.

Charles died at Southeast Health Medical Center on July 26, 2021. When Charles was given eternal rest by the God of Life on this day, He promised him happiness, peace, and joy.

Charles is survived by his four sisters: Annette Cunningham of Clayton, Alabama, Melonise Anglin of Atlanta, Georgia, Carolyn Martin of Clayton, Alabama, and Ida (Ardell) Sylvester of Eufaula, Alabama; eight nieces and nephews; five great nieces and nephews.
